The Molybdenum Supply Crisis and the Sangdong Expansion

· By Mansa Muhammad

South Korea is facing a molybdenum supply shortage that has reached a crisis level. As national stockpiles fall short, the South Korean government is actively urging private companies to secure the metal Almonty Industries reports in its recent update. This shortage places Almonty’s Sangdong Molybdenum Project at the center of a critical strategic intersection between resource security and industrial demand.

Molybdenum is essential for enhancing heat and corrosion resistance in steel and specialty alloys. Its utility spans aerospace, defense, nuclear energy, and petrochemicals, with recent demand expanding into semiconductors and renewable energy. The economic pressure on this market is evident: the spot price of molybdenum has increased by approximately 23.5% over the past year to 592.34 CNY/Kg.

Almonty is currently accelerating its drilling campaign at the Sangdong project in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, to confirm resources ahead of development. The program aims to re-examine mineralized structures and enhance resource categorization. To date, approximately 37% of the 26 planned drill holes have been completed. This campaign is intended to cover approximately 12,000 meters in total.

The data from the drilling suggests stability in the asset's quality. Assays received thus far show grades similar to those found in historical drill holes. For Almonty, the objective is clear: once the full extent of the ore body is confirmed, the company plans to begin mining without delay.

This development shifts the focus from mere exploration to a race for operational readiness. As South Korea seeks to mitigate its supply deficit, the ability to transition from drilling to active mining will determine whether Almonty can effectively bridge the gap between national demand and available domestic supply.

Watch the progress of the remaining drill holes to see if the reported grades hold across the full 12,000 meters of the program.
