The Bifurcation of Intelligence: Claude Fable 5

The Bifurcation of Intelligence: Claude Fable 5

June 10, 2026 · By Mansa Muhammad

Anthropic is splitting its latest intelligence release into two distinct tiers: a safe, general-use model and a high-capability version for specialized defense. The launch of Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 marks a shift toward controlled deployment of frontier capabilities.

Fable 5 is a Mythos-class1 model designed for general availability. Anthropic claims its capabilities exceed any model previously made generally available, specifically noting performance in software engineering, vision, and scientific research. To manage the risks associated with such high-level capabilities, the company has implemented conservative safeguards. These safeguards are designed to prevent misuse in areas like cybersecurity, though they may occasionally trigger on harmless requests, occurring in less than 5% of sessions. When these safeguards are triggered, the system redirects queries to Claude Opus 4.8.

The second tier, Claude Mythos 5, is being released to a small group of infrastructure providers and cyberdefenders. This model uses the same underlying architecture as Fable 5 but operates with lifted safeguards in certain areas. Initially, Mythos 5 will be deployed through Project Glasswing in collaboration with the US government. This deployment serves as an upgrade to Claude Mythos Preview and aims to provide the strongest cybersecurity capabilities available.

The economic strategy behind this release is aggressive. Anthropic is offering Fable 5 and Mythos 5 at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. This pricing is less than half the price of Claude Mythos Preview.

This dual-track release suggests that the era of "unfiltered" frontier models for the general public is ending. As model capabilities reach levels that can impact critical infrastructure, developers are forced to choose between safety-induced latency and the risks of raw power. The success of this strategy depends on whether the company can reduce the frequency of false positives while maintaining the integrity of the safeguards.

Watch the expansion of the Mythos 5 trusted access program to see how much of this high-tier capability remains gated behind government and infrastructure partnerships.
