Jamaica Enters the 5G Era

· By Mansa Muhammad

Jamaica has officially entered the 5G era following the launch of the nation's first 5G network. This rollout follows more than US$74 million in spending on network upgrades and spectrum acquisition.

The deployment by Flow brings significantly faster mobile internet to the island, but the transition is not instantaneous for the entire subscriber base. While the service reaches about 70 per cent of Flow customers, hardware and SIM compatibility remains a bottleneck. Access is initially limited to customers with compatible phones and SIM cards.

The infrastructure is ready, but the consumer layer is lagging. Flow Head of Marketing Latoy Lawrence noted that a sizeable number of subscribers are already positioned to benefit, but a portion of the customer base still requires upgrades to meet the necessary requirements.

This gap between network capability and device readiness is a standard friction point in global 5G rollouts. Heavy investment in spectrum and towers is meaningless if the handset ecosystem does not catch up. To address this, Flow is offering free SIM card upgrades at its 15 company-owned stores across the island. The company is also preparing to expand its range of 5G-compatible smartphones and introduce payment plans to assist with device affordability.

The success of this US$74 million investment depends on how effectively the provider can move the remaining subscriber base through the transition.

If you are a Flow subscriber, check your device compatibility and visit one of the 15 company-owned stores to ensure your SIM card is ready for the new network.
