Humanity Protocol Loses $36M After Private Keys 'Compromised,' Token Crashes 73%

The security of decentralized identity relies on the integrity of the underlying keys, a foundation that crumbled this week for Humanity Protocol. Attackers compromised project-linked keys following a breach of an employee laptop, resulting in the theft of more than $36 million across Ethereum and BNB Chain.

The breach was not a simple drain; it was a structural takeover. By compromising three of six Gnosis Safe keys on Ethereum and three of five on BSC, attackers seized ProxyAdmin control. This allowed for malicious contract upgrades that drained about 141.2 million H and minted another 200,000,005 H. The impact on the native H token was immediate and severe. The token plunged from highs of $0.73132 to a low of $0.079606, representing a drop of 89%. While the token is currently trading near $0.20, it remains down 73% on the day, erasing the momentum that had pushed the token close to an all-time high of $0.80.

This event is a significant data point in a difficult year for decentralized finance. The Humanity breach extends a period where protocols have lost more than $885 million to DeFi hacks in the first six months of 2026. It highlights a persistent vulnerability in the "human" layer of blockchain: the physical security of the people managing the code.

For the industry, the implications are clear. The failure of the Gnosis Safe keys demonstrates that even multi-signature setups are vulnerable if the underlying hardware or personnel are compromised. The ability of attackers to mint 200,000,005 H through contract upgrades suggests that administrative controls remain a single point of failure for Layer-2 ecosystems.

The team has halted deposits and withdrawals to the affected bridges and is working with exchanges and police. As the project prepares a post-mortem, the focus must shift from the mechanics of the theft to the systemic failure of the administrative perimeter.
