Google to Exit CBRS Spectrum Management

· By Mansa Muhammad

Google Cloud is exiting the spectrum access system (SAS) market, signaling a shift in how the cloud giant manages quasi-licensed Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) spectrum. According to reports on the service shutdown, the company plans to fully shutter its management platform by June 10, 2027.

The timeline for this retirement is already in motion. Google noted that starting June 10, 2026, it will no longer accept new customers. While existing customers can continue using the service during a transition period, the window for planning a migration to a different vendor is narrowing.

This move forces a redistribution of control within the CBRS ecosystem. The FCC established rules in mid-2015 to utilize 150 megahertz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band, designed to open access to under-utilized resources previously held by government agencies. Because this spectrum is used by the Department of Defense for Navy ship radars and fixed-satellite receiving stations, a SAS acts as the essential clearinghouse to manage usage.

The exit of a major player like Google Cloud creates an immediate opportunity for established competitors. Providers such as Federated Wireless, Red Technologies, Nokia, Sony, and Keybridge are positioned to absorb this migrating traffic.

Federated Wireless CEO Iyad Tarazi has already signaled readiness for the influx. Tarazi noted that his firm has migrated 180,000-plus devices across various networks, including government and industrial sectors. He highlighted the company's use of a 100 percent nationwide sensor network covering US coastal areas, Alaska, Hawaii, and US territories to support the ecosystem.

For organizations relying on Google’s SAS for 5G or enterprise wireless deployments, the implication is clear: the era of Google-managed spectrum access is ending. The technical complexity of moving shared spectrum management requires a transition strategy that begins well before the 2026 cutoff for new users and the 2027 final shutdown.

Organizations must audit their current CBRS dependencies and evaluate whether their next management vendor can support the specific geographic and regulatory requirements of their network.
