Ericsson Moves AI into the Radio Layer

Ericsson is shifting the intelligence of 5G networks directly into the radio unit. By deploying a software-only AI suite within the Radio Access Network (RAN), the company is attempting to decouple advanced processing from specialized hardware dependencies as reported by RCR Wireless.

This transition toward software-defined intelligence changes the economics of network deployment. Moving AI capabilities into the RAN allows for more dynamic resource management without requiring a complete overhaul of physical infrastructure. For operators, this represents a move away from rigid hardware cycles and toward a model where network optimization is driven by algorithmic updates.

The significance lies in the architecture. When AI resides within the radio software, the network can react to real-time environmental changes with greater precision. This capability is essential as 5G networks grow in complexity and demand more granular control over signal processing and traffic management.
