Domain Expertise Has Always Been the Real Moat
The difficulty of software development has never resided in the act of writing code. The true challenge lies in constructing a functional model of a specific domain within the mind before a single line is shipped. Domain expertise has always been the real moat, and the rise of agentic AI is fundamentally breaking the industry's traditional organizational assumptions.
Historically, software was a transcription of understanding. To build a payroll system, a developer had to master the nuances of garnishments and pre-tax deductions. To build a transit app, they had to understand the distinction between a trip and a route. Agentic AI has severed the link between the ability to write code and the ability to understand the domain. You can now produce software without ever building that internal model.
This shift changes the nature of the binding constraint in engineering. The central question is moving from whether a developer can build a system to whether they can determine if that system is correct.
The impact of this shift creates a divergence between two types of users. The first is the domain expert—the logistics dispatcher, the clinical coder, or the actuarial professional—who lacks a software background. While they cannot interpret a stack trace, they possess the ground truth. They can look at an agent-generated schedule and instantly recognize a legal impossibility in a driver's shift. They provide the oracle that the agent lacks.
The second is the strong generalist engineer. This engineer understands reliability, testing, and how to prevent a system from failing at 2am. However, without domain knowledge, they lack the ability to distinguish a plausible-looking wrong answer from a right one. An agent can generate a billing rule that compiles and passes all written tests, yet remains subtly and expensively incorrect. The engineer can verify that the software is well-built, but they cannot verify its correctness.
The value in the age of agents is migrating away from the ability to produce code and toward the ability to validate it against reality.
As agentic systems become more capable of executing the "how" of programming, identify where you hold the "what." Are you building systems that rely on code execution, or are you building the ground truth necessary to govern it?
