Arianespace Scales Ariane 6 Capacity for Amazon
Arianespace is preparing to launch its heaviest payload to date, marking a shift in the operational capacity of the Ariane 6 rocket. The mission, designated [VA269 by Arianespace and LE-03 by Amazon](https://spaceflightnow.com/2026/
06/17/live-coverage-arianespace-to-launch-its-heaviest-payload-to-date-with-amazon-leo-flight/), will deploy 36 Amazon Leo broadband internet satellites into low Earth orbit. This launch follows successful flights in February and April and represents the third of 18 Ariane 6 flights booked by Amazon Leo.
The mission introduces the P160C booster configuration. This upgraded version is 1 meter longer than the predecessor P120C design and holds about 156 tons of solid propellant. This increase in propellant provides about 14 more tons than the P120C boosters, enabling a 10-15 percent increase in performance for the launcher.
The engineering shift directly impacts payload volume. The P160C boosters can produce 3,800 kN of thrust each at liftoff, compared to 3,700 kN of thrust from the P120C boosters. This iteration of the Ariane 64 can deliver 36 Amazon Leo satellites to orbit, which is four more than previously.
This development signals a transition from establishing a launch cadence to optimizing heavy-lift efficiency. For Arianespace, the priority is securing this milestone while increasing the number of satellites the launcher can carry per mission. The partnership with Amazon, which Arianespace CEO David Cavaillolès describes as a partnership rather than a mere contract, provides the commercial volume necessary to refine these technical iterations.
The launch window opens at 8:53 a.m. Kourou time (7:53 a.m. EDT / 1153 UTC). Less than 2.5 minutes after liftoff, the four P160C boosters will separate from the Ariane 6 main stage.
